For this assignment, you will be required to choose your own FEATURE length documentary analyse its composition and messages, then present it to the class in a 10-15 minute presentation. This will be done in the following steps and the submission guidelines are listed below.

 

Step #1

Choose documentary and analyse its composition.

1. What techniques of documentary filmamking does the director use?

2. What elements of voice is present?

3. What type of documentary is this one? Explain how you know.

4. What is the intended audience of the documentary?

 

Step #2

Analyse the purpose of the documentary and its value.

1. Why did the filmmaker choose to make this film?

2. Does it serve its purpose? Does it entertain AND inform?

3. Is the documentary biased or are both sides of the issue presented?

4. Does the film act as propaganda?

 

Step #3

Write a 2 page report on the documenatry, its composition and its messages. Use the answers in Step #1 and #2 to complete this written report. Use MLA formatting.

 

Step#4               

Select a 5 minute (NO LONGER!!) scene from your documentary (YouTube preferably).

Discuss the report you created and present to the class what techniques the director chose to use and why you think that shot was used. For example, “The director chose a shaky, hand-held camera shot to convey action, rushing, and the fear and nervousness of the main character.”

Your presentation should be no longer than 5 minutes.
